VINALHAVEN — A Vinalhaven resident has passed away after the vehicle he was operating struck a tree Wednesday, July 12.

At 12:09 p.m., the Knox Regional Communications Center began receiving 911 calls of a serious crash on Pequot Road in Vinalhaven. Vinalhaven firefighters and EMTs attempted to revive the driver, who was the sole occupant, while Lifeflight of Maine was en route to the scene. However, the driver, Randall Farnham, 67, of Vinalhaven, passed away a short time later.

Preliminary information is that a 1999 Dodge 2500 truck operated by Randall Farnham, 67, of Vinalhaven, left the roadway on Pequot Road and struck a tree, according to Deputy Chief Curt Andrick, in a Knox County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The exact cause and circumstances are currently being investigated. Yet, “based on the initial investigation it is believed that Mr. Farnham suffered from some type of medical event prior to the crash,” said Andrick.

Several deputies responded to the scene, with most coming from the mainland on a Marine Patrol vessel. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Vinalhaven Fire and Rescue, Lifeflight of Maine, the Maine Marine Patrol, and Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral services.
