Herbert R. Simmons, Sr., obituary

WALDOBORO — Herbert R. Simmons, Sr., 74, died peacefully, Thursday, May 30, 2024 at the Sussman House in Rockport following a brief battle with cancer.

Born in Rockland, February 20, 1950, he was the son of Ralph and Virginia Tibbetts Simmons. He was educated locally, graduating from Medomak Valley High School, where he was a member of the baseball team. Herbert spent most of his career on the water, first serving as Harbor Master in Friendship for a few years, and later as captain of his own lobster boat.

Never one to be in a hurry, Herbert earned the nickname ‘Father-Time’ When he wasn’t busy working, Herbert enjoyed spending time outside, hunting, playing horseshoes, or watching horse racing. He also enjoyed playing cards and blowing, and especially loved watching wrestling on TV, often watching with his neighbors on Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

Predeceased by his parents, and a daughter, Dachery Harrington; Herbert is survived by his children Herbert ‘Bub’ Simmons, Jr., Brandy Simmons both of Waldoboro, Brett Simmons of Friendship, Joseph Simmons of Union, Miranda Simmons of New York, Michelle Simmons of Friendship; a step-son, Michael Reed of Rockland; a brother, Bradley Simmons of Friendship; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering will be held Friday, August 16, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Hahn Community Center, 31 Main Street, Friendship.
