Ret Talbot to speak in Belfast, celebrates the release of his new book

BELFAST — Tuesday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m., the Belfast Free Library will host a talk with Ret Talbot, author of Chasing Shadows - Unravelling the Mysteries of the Great White Shark. The talk will take place in the Abbott Room of the Library and is free and open to all.

This event is a celebration of the paperback release of Chasing Shadows - Unravelling the Mysteries of the Great White Shark by science writer and Rockland-based author Ret Talbot. The book, written with shark biologist Greg Skomal, chronicles the return of the white shark to New England’s coast.

“At its heart, it is a conservation success story, but also one that challenges our idea of what it means to be prey – even if we’re only mistaken as such,” said a news release.

Scientific illustrator Karen Talbot, who created the illustrations and maps in the book, will be on hand to share her large painting of “Mueller,” the shark featured in chapter one of the book, and she will add an original sketch of a white shark to the title page of any books purchased at the event.

Ret Talbot is an award-winning journalist with over two decades of experience covering stories from some of the more remote corners of the globe. From the glacial summits of the Andes to the reefs of Papua New Guinea, his assignments have taken him off the beaten track and put his readers face-to-face with stories of adventure, new ideas and innovative approaches to vexing environmental problems. When not on assignment, he can be found with his wife, scientific illustrator Karen Talbot, on their wee farm in Midcoast Maine, where they grow over 50 cultivars of peppers and raise endangered heritage breed ducks.
