    Did You Know!

In the 1950s Ford decided to enter the sports car market to keep consumers in the Ford family. After the introduction of Chevrolet's Corvette in 1953, Ford accelerated this process with the Thunderbird under instructions to create a two-seat car able to reach 100 mph.

The Thunderbird was a pleasure car for drivers who wanted to use their expendable income on a sporty car filled with creature comforts and safety features. In 1955 Ford sold 2 times as many Thunderbirds than the Chevrolet Corvette. More importantly, the Thunderbird helped transform Ford as the maker of working-class cars into a pop culture icon that attracted American youths and young executives. Over time, the Thunderbird grew larger and only more popular.

Visit the OHTM website for an updated listing of historic automotive and aircraft demonstrations for the event at https://owlshead.org/.
