CUSHING — David Allen Dickey, 66 of Cushing, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, August 16 at the Sussman House after a period of declining health, with his sister by his side.

David was born on September 28, 1955, to Stanley and Rose Marie Dickey. He and his siblings were proudly raised in Southie, where they enjoyed many adventures with their uncles and extended family. As an adult he had many jobs in South Boston, including working for the state and a professional garbologist.

He was a great pool player, enjoying many games at Aces High. He later moved to the Midcoast area of Maine to be closer to his family, living in Searsport, Cushing, and Thomaston. He worked for Harris Construction where Neil gave him the nickname many knew him by, “Julio”. He made many friends at the Water Street apartments. He often watched his young cousin, Renee after school, meeting her at the school bus and teasingly advising the other kids that he was her bodyguard.

David moved on to the Brunswick and Portland areas for a while, where he was known for being a resourceful person often helping homeless friends find their way through the streets. He was easily recognized by his always present bandana. He later moved back to Cushing and settled into a quiet life with his uncle Herman and his cousins. He shared a special bond with his cousin Bobby, and his nephew Jason.

Dave loved the company of his beloved fish, his extended family, and an occasional shot of Jack. He recently enjoyed a memorable return trip to Southie, where he was able to catch up with his best friend, Steve Arnold.  Though he had a stubborn streak a mile wide, his sense of humor and joking ways will surely be missed. He enjoyed music, horror movies, crime shows and sharing a cold beer with friends and family.

David was predeceased by his parents; brother, Stanley; sister Donna; niece, Tammy; uncles, Herman and Louis; and dear friend, Bob “Wilson” Lawson.

He is survived by his sister, Mariellen and her husband John Curtis; sister-in-law, Mary-Lou Dickey; nephews, Ryan and Eric Curtis, Jason Dickey, and Edwin Borbe; nieces, Serena Quinn, April Markley, and Carol Cahill; as well as many great-nieces, nephews and cousins. He shared special relationships with his cousins, Paula Byrnes, and Brian and Robert Soiett.

The family would like to express a deep appreciation to family friend Melanie Tebo, Dr. Valerie Donohue, palliative care nurse Lori Ann, hospice nurses, Val and Tanya, and the wonderful nurses and CNAs at the Sussman House for their kindness and support of Dave and his family.

While no formal services will be held per his wishes, there will be a celebration of life at the next Dickey Family Weekend in Cushing.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME.
