Folk-rock-world music fusion at Camden Snow Bowl

Art folk rock group Billy Wylder to perform at Camden Summer Sounds, Aug. 18

CAMDEN — Art folk rock group Billy Wylder will perform this year’s third Camden Summer Sounds concert Sunday, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m., at the Camden Snow Bowl, 20 Barnestown Road. Thanks to Camden Opera House’s Community Arts Fund, admission is free.

Billy Wylder, led by musician, activist and educator Avi Salloway, is a band “carrying the torch of the niche dug out by Talking Heads and their groundbreaking album ‘Remain in Light,’ according to Boston’s WBUR. Salloway (Bombino/Hey Mama/Avi & Celia) is joined by an inspired cast of singular artists who have performed across six continents including concerts at Coachella, Newport Folk Festival, New Orleans Jazz Fest, Montreal Jazz Fest, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center.

One of the most compelling groups on the independent music scene, Billy Wylder is grounded in the desert blues-rock Salloway was immersed in while touring with Niger’s acclaimed guitarist Omara Moctar (“Bombino”). But the band’s music also reflects his upbringing, learning music directly from American folk legends Pete and John Seeger, and early exposure to the power of music to bring people together.

Attendees are invited to bring lawn seating and picnics; water will be available for sale, to benefit series sponsor the Community Arts Fund. All dogs must be on leash. In the event of wet weather, the concert will be held at the downtown Camden Opera House. Any rain location decisions will be made 5 p.m. the day before and posted on camdenoperahouse.com and in social media. The series concludes Sunday, Aug. 25, with Portland-based indie-soul sextet Midnight Breakfast, which includes Camden native Myles Kelley.
