Fri, 01/12/2024 - 8:45pm
In response to the pressing childcare crisis affecting families across the Midcoast, the Town of Thomaston will conduct a needs assessment survey to address the town's childcare needs. The town intends to collaborate with community partners to establish an early childhood center, offering support to working parents and promoting good developmental outcomes for Thomaston's children, said the town, in a Jan. 12 news release.

“Recognizing the urgent need for accessible and quality childcare services, the Town of Thomaston is committed to tackling this challenge proactively,” the release said. “Through a collaborative effort with key stakeholders, including the Maine Association for the Education of Young Children, Thomaston aims to develop a center that meets the diverse needs of the community.”

Town Manager Kara George said, in the release: "As part of the Town of Thomaston Comprehensive Plan, the community recognizes the growing need for early childhood education. This program is key for our young children to receive the educational foundation to a successful transition into elementary school. It also serves as great comfort and support for working parents to re-enter the workforce knowing their children are in a safe learning environment."

The survey intends to gather insights into the specific childcare requirements of Thomaston residents, with a focus on ages, affordability, hours of care, and additional needs such as wrap-around care for pre-K students.

The information collected will play a role in shaping the development of the proposed early childhood center.

Residents of Thomaston, as well as surrounding towns, are encouraged to participate in this survey to voice their needs and contribute to the creation of a tailored childcare solution for Thomaston. The survey can be accessed online at https://forms.office.com/r/eKgyCA9LyN.
