empowering young adults experiencing homelessness in Waldo County

Open Garden event to benefit ‘But Still I Am One’

BROOKS — Jean and Art Robbie-Shea will host a fund raising event open to the public, on behalf of the nonprofit But Still I Am One, Sunday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Jean Robbie-Shea Memorial Gardens, at 44 McTaggart Street, in Brooks.

Jean, a former Belfast Garden Club member, and her husband, Art, purchased this peaceful garden property from Master Gardener Mary Kivel and her husband in 2016. This 5.7-acre property has extensive gardens, which has Jean lovingly restored and expanded, including a shade garden with a Japanese maple tree, and additional smaller gardens scattered around the house and property. There is a farm pond, fruit trees and berry bushes.

Mixed among the gardens are a variety of stone sculptures and a stone sculpture studio in the barn. Art has made sculptures for over 14 years and gives sculpting lessons weekly all year round.

Plenty of wildlife abounds among the secret paths to the Marsh River where you can observe beavers, muskrats, turtles (snapping and painted), eagles, osprey, deer, foxes, skunks, squirrels, chipmunks, frogs and many birds.

“Bring the kids, they love to catch frogs (nets provided) and swing on the tire swing,” said a news release.

This event is a fundraiser for But Still I Am One, a local 501c3 organization that supports and empowers young adults 16-21 years old who are experiencing homelessness in Waldo County. Funds help support local young people as they struggle to stay in high school, find a job, cover transportation, and stay warm during the winter.

Admission is free. Recommended donation is $20.
