LIBERTY — A Liberty man was arrested Feb. 19 after he reportedly shot his alleged victim in the arm during an argument.

James Billings, 68, has been arrested and charged with elevated aggravated assault and is currently being held at Waldo County Correctional Facility without bail.

The incident came to police attention after a 911 call reporting that an individual had been shot with a firearm at a residence on Pinnacle Road, according to a press release issued by Waldo County Chief Deputy Jason Trundy Feb. 22.

The complainant reported that the victim had come to their home seeking assistance after being wounded. Law enforcement personnel from the WSO, Maine State Police, and the Maine Warden’s Service responded to the initial call for service, the report states.

Upon investigation, WSO investigators were reportedly able to determine that Billings had been involved in a verbal altercation with someone who had been living at Billings’ residence. The argument escalated with Billings eventually shooting the victim in the arm with a handgun, according to the report.

It is noted that the victim immediately left the residence to seek aid.

The victim was transported to Waldo County General Hospital by Liberty Ambulance Service, where they were treated for the gunshot wound before being released.
