generating a mathematical model of wave action and storm surge specific to Camden Harbor

Jeff Jordan to discuss storm surge resilience, Aug. 7

CAMDEN — Longtime Camden resident Jeff Jordan will discuss ongoing research about the impacts of winter storm surges during a free public presentation Wednesday, August 7, at 7 p.m., at the Camden Yacht Club.

The Camden Harbor Wave and Storm Surge Resiliency Study aims to help the community develop meaningful resiliency strategies to prepare for sea level rise and the increasing frequency of severe storms.

Jordan will explain the study’s origins and methods and show the results after the first year of its two-year run time. Once the study concludes, private citizens and local, state, and federal government departments can access and use the data however they wish, according to a news release.

Researchers led by Julia Hopkins, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Northeastern University, have been deploying solar-powered buoys in and around the harbor to continuously measure wave height, frequency, and direction in the harbor. They have constantly transmitted their measurements to the university for the past year, generating a mathematical model of wave action and storm surge specific to Camden Harbor. The model can run scenarios of storms from any set of designated conditions and generate wave and storm surge conditions within the harbor, as well as the impact of prospective storm surge mitigation infrastructure on wave height and storm surge. The goal is to focus time and limited resources on strategies most likely to work.

Hopkins will join the presentation remotely and holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering and a Ph.D. in applied ocean science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Jordan has sailed in and around Camden Harbor for most of his life, has a degree in nautical science from Maine Maritime Academy, and maintains a United States Coast Guard third mate unlimited tonnage navigator’s license. Before starting a medical career, he supervised the construction of United States Navy nuclear submarines and surface ships at the Electric Boat and Bath Iron Works shipyards. He graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology.

The Yacht Club at 68 Bay View Street will host Jordan’s talk as a community service, open to the public.
