“ShinDaiko” brings Japanese drumming to Strand’s Summer Outdoor Series

ROCKLAND — The Strand Theatre’s outdoor Sunshine Series will bring “ShinDaiko,” a Japanese taiko drumming ensemble based in Boston, to the Safe Harbor Gazebo, 60 Ocean St in Rockland, on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. This performance is appropriate for all ages and admission is Pay-What-You-Can ($0-20).

As a contemporary taiko ensemble, “ShinDaiko” builds on traditional taiko roots while exploring modern melodies and sounds with a multi-instrumentalist roster of musicians. The Japanese character “Shin” in “ShinDaiko” means “advancing” or “moving forward.” ShinDaiko seeks to always be moving forward in their musical vision, to explore new ideas and concepts, and to weave the powerful sounds of taiko with other musical influences to create their own distinct melody. The ensemble includes Ger Tysk, an artist, musician, and sailor who explores cultural exchange and the role of the sea in the Asian-American experience.

Each Summer Series performance is 50-60 minutes long, and appropriate for all ages. Seating is on the concrete floor of the gazebo, so blankets and chairs are welcome. In case of inclement weather, the performance will take place indoors at the Strand Theatre. Please check our website and social media the day of the event for weather updates.

Upcoming in the Summer Series is “Ants on a Log,” a duo that performs folk music for all ages, on Thursday, August 29, at 10:30 a.m. “The Bellybutton Peace Brigade” will open this show.

“Sunshine Series” performances are presented by J. Edward Knight Insurance and co-produced by the Coastal Children’s Museum, with event sponsors OUT Maine, Rockland Rotary, Safe Harbor Rockland, and the Rockland Harbor YMCA.

Tickets are available at www.rocklandstrand.com, by calling 207-594-0070, or at the lobby box office when the theater is open for shows. Advance ticket reservations are recommended for all, but required for groups over 20. All group inquiries can be directed to the Strand’s Education Manager, Brittany Parker, at brittany@rocklandstrand.com. The Strand Theatre is located at 345 Main Street, Rockland.
