Belfast Garden Club’s Open Garden goes to Lincolnville

LINCOLNVILLE — Two frogs embrace beside a pond while an alligator looks on. A yellow pinwheel twirls beside an arbor of pink climbing roses, while in the background, lobster buoys decorate an arbor made from salvaged columns covered in vines. A striped snake masquerades as a fence, holding back the hostas.

“These are a few of the whimsical delights awaiting visitors to the second of the Belfast Garden Club’s Open Garden Days on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.” said Belfast Garden Club, in a news release

The garden, owned by Ken and Elaine Nguyen, is located at 2412 Atlantic Avenue in Lincolnville.

The $5 admission to the garden helps to support the club’s public service projects throughout the year. The event will be held rain or shine. Season passes will be available for $35 on site.

The snake, alligator, and frogs aren’t real, so they’ll stay in place while visitors stroll a garden that would be at home in a storybook. Open the gate made of branches and take the gravel path past gazing balls tucked beside a boxwood hedge. The hedge creates a courtyard where a black iron crow presides over lilies and climbing vines. Tucked around the corner, another stone frog spits water into a shallow pond shaded by ferns. If you look closely, you might just spot a stone peacock peeking out from beneath the heart-shaped leaves of a climbing vine.

Lobster buoys decorate a lacy white pergola placed where the scent of roses is strong. Deep indigo irises raise spiky leaves beside a weathered wooden bench. Look up and you’ll see a miniature whale sailing through the breeze under a wooden pavilion fashioned from recycled timber.

“If The Secret Garden sparked your childhood imagination, you’ll enjoy this garden crafted by the Nguyens,” said the release.

Open Garden Days will be held each Saturday from June 22 through August 17. For the complete Open Garden Days schedule, visit belfastgardenclub.org. Proceeds support the garden club’s school programs, camp scholarships, library donations, and public gardens that are maintained by club volunteers.
