UPDATE: A Damariscotta man who was arrested early Wednesday morning, April 26, after police say he entered a bedroom in a Warren residence and told a couple that a man was after him and was going to shoot him made his initial appearance in Knox County Court.

Harold E. Morton, 41, is charged with unlawful possession of heroin, trafficking in prison contraband, and two counts of criminal trespass.

Judge Sarah Gilbert set bail for Morton at $1,500 cash at the hearing on April 26.

According to the affidavit filed in Knox County Court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, police received a report shortly after 3 a.m. from a couple on Gardner Road in Warren who were woken up by their dogs barking alerting them that a man was in their bedroom.

The couple said the man asked them to call 911 because he was being chased by someone with a gun and needed help.

Police reviewed the security video at the home and the suspect was seen entering through a door.

Police also received reports that the same man had been inside a nearby garage, again recorded on a security video, and had knocked on the doors of other neighbors saying he needed help, according to the affidavit.

The suspect was stopped in a vehicle at the intersection of Camden and Gardner Roads by Rockland Deputy Police Chief Alex Gaylor.

Police found heroin on Morton and additional drugs were found hidden in his sock when he was searched at the Knox County Corrections Facility.

Officers went to a nearby residence that Morton said was the place where the other man was threatening him. Two women at the residence told police that the man Morton had named was traveling back to Warren from Massachusetts and he had not seen the suspect in awhile. Police found drugs at the residence, according to the affidavit.

Morton is scheduled to appear in court again on June 15 for a dispositional conference.

WARREN — A man who somehow entered a stranger’s bedroom this morning, April 26, in Warren, is facing multiple charges, and, with the investigation still continuing, may face even more.

According to Knox County Sheriff Pat Polky, the Knox Regional Communications Center received 911 reports starting at approximately 3:02 a.m., from the vicinity of Gardner Road, in Warren. In one report, a caller reported being awoken by an unknown man in the bedroom screaming for someone to call 911. Other callers also reported that a man had entered several homes and was making statements similar to the effect that someone was after him with a gun.

Based on the gravity of the subject matter being reported to the KRCC at the time, dispatchers decided it was prudent to request law enforcement response from the multiple Knox County officers on duty at the time. In doing so, units from Knox S.O. and Camden, Thomaston, Rockland, and Rockport PDs immediately responded to the area.

“This is a great example of the collaboration that exists between our law enforcement agencies and led to the successful de-escalation of a tense situation,” said Polky. “To me, this highlights the importance of law enforcement agencies having mutual aid agreements and arrest powers with other jurisdictions.

Harold E. Morton, 41, of Warren, is charged with Criminal Trespassing, Trafficking in Drugs and Trafficking in Prison Contraband. He is currently being held at the Knox County Corrections Facility with bail set at $2500 cash.

Because this remains a fluid incident, with other circumstances involved, a full investigation is ongoing at this time.
