ROCKLAND — Two adults and a juvenile were charged July 12 with weapons violations and drug charges following a traffic stop in Rockland.

On July 12 at around 11:30 a.m., Rockland Police responded to a report of a vehicle, operating erratically, on Route 17 heading towards Rockland. Officers located the vehicle and observed a traffic violation, according to a news release from the Rockland Police Department.

After stopping the vehicle, the officers found the driver, Eliesha Merriam, 38, of Hartford, was driving with a suspended license. She was charged with operating after suspension and unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.

Further investigation found that a passenger, Maurice Johnson, 21, of Brooklyn N.Y. was in possession of a significant quantity of cocaine, approximately 50 grams, along with about 14 grams of cocaine base or crack, approximately 10 grams of fentanyl, and multiple prescription opiates. He was also in possession of a handgun.

Johnson was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of scheduled drugs and felony aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs (enhanced charge due to the possession of a firearm).

Johnson was transported to the Knox County Jail. He will make his initial court appearance on Sept. 5.

Another passenger, a juvenile from Brooklyn N.Y., was also in possession of a handgun.

The juvenile was arrested and charged with a concealing a weapon under 21, but ultimately released from the police department with a juvenile summons at the request of the Juvenile Community Corrections Officer. Rockland Police noted that in juvenile cases, the decision to hold at a secure juvenile facility on criminal charges is dictated by both state law and Department of Corrections policy, not the Rockland Police Department.
