Kitty Wales “Shift” installation opens in Rockland, July 26

ROCKLAND — A solo installation of constructions and prints by Kitty Wales, call “Shift,” will open with a reception on Friday, July 26, from 4 - 6 p.m., at Triangle Gallery, in Rockland. The artist will be giving a talk on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 3 p.m. The show will run through August 25.

Wales provided analysis, in a Triangle Gallery news release:

“Domestic table settings and disassembled chairs are the building blocks of these narrative assemblages. They contain memories that morph over time, shifting in and out of the original thread. This narrative theme began in 2019 after studying Mesoamerican codices on visits to the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. Those painted manuscripts document bloodlines, history, science, and sacred rituals of Mayan and Aztec rulers. Within tight frameworks they display a colorful pictorial language activated by symbols and characters. I loosely borrowed that format of recorded history to build beginning stages of the narrative landscapes. Discarded objects have always been materials of choice in my work, making use of what we leave behind. Within each wall construction are fabricated household objects serving as historical icons, reanimating the memories they retain. Altered purposely in their construction, these crockeries and vessels still represent potential utility despite their dented appearance, a credit to the people who used them. Each piece in this series evolves through the process of making and experimenting, as I build up multiple layers of color and texture with water-based pencils, graphite, aqua resin, epoxy putty and paper pulp. Some of these layers are visible while others are buried, erased, or altered to mimic the shifting nature of narrative memory.”

Wales lives and works in Belfast. She has taught sculpture and drawing at the College and University level including as Assistant Professor and Senior Lecturer in Sculpture at Boston University for over 25 years.
