“Support Our Pollinators” Rockland outreach program begins with Walk and Talk on invasive plants

ROCKLAND — The City of Rockland is launching a program to share information about pollinator-friendly lawn care, as well as alternatives to pesticides for pest management. Entitled “Support Our Pollinators!” the program kicks off on Wednesday, Aug. 28, with a 3:30 p.m., Walk and Talk on invasive plants. The Walk and Talk will begin on the front lawn of the Rockland Public Library, at 80 Union Street, and is free and open to the public.

Hosted by Louisa Crane of Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District, Walk and Talk participants will be guided on a walking tour of Rockland and will learn how to identify, prevent, and remove invasive plants along the way. Invasive plants can increase erosion, reduce the capacity of a natural area to absorb rainwater (increasing runoff), and interfere with pollinator food sources.

All are encouraged to attend the Invasive Plants Walk and Talk and visit www.rocklandmaine.gov/pollinators to explore pest-management options and ways to support healthy local ecosystems. Methods highlighted include integrated pest management, beneficial insects, organic pesticides, rainwater management, native plantings, and lawn alternatives.

The City has been pesticide-free on City-owned and -leased property since 2014. For more information, visit www.rocklandmaine.gov/pollinators or email sustainability@rocklandmaine.gov.
