Maine Artist Series at The Waldo presents 2 films: ‘Eat Flowers’ and ‘The Arc of Obvilion’’ on Thursday, Aug. 8th at 6:00pm

The final presentation in our Maine Artist Film Series are two heart stirring and thought-provoking films from Maine artists... EAT FLOWERS and THE ARC OF OBLIVION. We are thrilled to have Filmmaker River Finlay and Filmmaker Ian Cheney with us for a post-screening Q&A.

Eat Flowers is a short film inspired by British artist Cig Harvey’s, Blue Violet, a book of photographs and writing that explores themes of isolation, beauty, and loss. Told through a series of poetic vignettes, Eat Flowers brings us into the dreamy worlds that Cig creates for her best friend Mary who is being treated for Leukemia. These artistic gifts create a portal for us to experience magic in unexpected places: a dahlia compost heap, a field of yellow weeds, a disco ball. Cig’s vibrant, passionate work breaks open a world we didn't know we were missing. Eat Flowers tells an urgent story about living, all through the language of flowers.

Runtime: 14 minutes

FOLLOWED BY...The Arc of Oblivion is an unexpectedly playful search for an answer to a deeply existential question. Set against the backdrop of Filmmaker Ian Cheney’s quixotic quest to build an ark in a field in Maine... in WALDOBORO!... the film heads far afield — to salt mines in the Alps, fjords in the Arctic, and ancient libraries in the Sahara — to illuminate the strange world of archives, record-keeping, and memory. Haunted by ghosts of lost digital footage, a filmmaker begins building a secure, ark-like structure in Maine to house his movies and many collections, which leads to this film’s main question: Why are humans the only animals to archive? To send their art, stories and data to future versions of themselves? The director weaves great cinematography and fascinating interviews from science and art experts – including filmmaker (and Executive Producer of the film) Werner Herzog – into a quirky, masterful film.

Runtime: 1 hour, 38 minutes
