Robert N. Davis, obituary

ROCKLAND — Robert N. Davis, 83, died Friday, April 8, 2022, at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Thomaston, May 16, 1938, he was the son of Harlan A. and Violet P. Mclean Davis.

Educated in local schools, Bob was a 1956 graduate of Rockland High School. Soon after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, Bob earned a Liberal Arts Associates Degree, attended Naval Photography School and Naval Aviation School. He worked as a photojournalist with the Light Photographic Squadron VFP-62PT and in public information with Photo and Air Intelligence. As well, he assisted in publishing a Navy Newsletter, releasing photos and news items for publications in newspapers back home and the Navy Times.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob worked as a member of a seismograph crew, looking for possible oil deposits in Texas. He went on to work at a department store and a farm in Florida, before returning to Maine. For some time, he worked with Harbor Supply Company in Portland, as an Engineer aboard the William McLoon and other small tanker ships, delivering gas and fuel oil to islands off the coast of Maine.

In his spare time, Bob enjoyed painting, interior design and was pleased when one of his works received “Best of Show” at a 1986 Art Festival.

An active volunteer, he served as a fund raiser for WCBB TV Public Broadcasting; was a past President and Recording Secretary with the Shore Village Historical Society in Rockland, and for many years served as a docent with the Shore Village Light House Museum when it was located on Limerock Street in Rockland.

Other than his parents, Bob was predeceased by a brother, Holman Davis.

He is survived by two sisters, Sheila Witham and her husband Elmer of Owls Head, Evangeline Fish and her husband Arnold of Rockland; twin brothers, Al and Dan Bowen of Rockland; a sister-in-law, Roberta Davis of Topsham; six nephews, Tom, Jeff and Keith Fish, Clayton and Kevin Witham, Kevin Davis; one niece, Heather Arnette; a special cousin, Christine Brackett and her daughter Tammy; as well as many other extended family members.

Bob’s family thanks the staff at Sussman House for their care and support during this time.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Thursday, April 14, 2022, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a funeral service will be held Friday, April 15, at 11 a.m. Pastor William Hickey will officiate. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Rockland Historical Society, 80 Union St. #2925, Rockland, ME 04841.
