Pen Bay high school sailors reckon with light and variable breezes at Boothbay Harbor regatta

Pen Bay Sailing League’s second regatta was hosted at Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club September 30. Forty-three high school sailors from eight Maine high schools, including Camden Hills, Oceanside, Islesboro, Mount Desert Island, Lincoln Academy, Boothbay, Portland and Greeley as well as Rockland Community Sailing competed in A and B Divisions for the second of the three PBSL Fall regattas.

As has been the theme this fall, light and variable breezes tested the patience of the competitors forcing an abandonment of race one and leaving the Race Committee with little choice but to run a series of course-shortened races. A total of 11 teams (several schools fielded multiple teams) competed in both A and B Divisions.

By the end of the regatta, winner Lincoln Academy made a clear statement on their home course sweeping all four races in the A Division and three of four races in the B Division.

Rounding out the Team standings Camden finished second overall with Oceanside a few points behind in forth.

Top individual local finishers in A Division included Camden Hills’ Charlie Conover and Greer LaFiura in second with Oceanside’s Emmett Door and Sarah Vallance (RCS) a close third.

In B Division, Olive Conover and Ava Tobias wound up in third place with Raya Leuhman and Camille Rose (RCS) in seventh. Additional competitors included Islesboro’s Alma Bewsher and Samantha Conover, Eloise Mooney and Rosie Brimley, as well as Sophia Skrivanich and Autumn Hill from RCS.
