Moth storyteller to shares insights about life, incarceration, and the natural world

BELFAST — While in prison, Michael Fischer thought a lot about what he would do when he was released. “Attend a SantaCon and a LebowskiFest. Float down the Columbia River in Oregon. Become a hospice volunteer…” But planning inside is not like living outside.

The first chapter of his memoir-in-progress finds Fischer staring down the mural of a bighorn ram on a mountain in Montana, not quite sure of what would come next. Fast forward: In late June, he’ll be in Belfast, having published essays in The New York Times, Guernica, and Salon. He’s also spun stories on the Moth mainstage.

Fischer will be reading and kicking up conversation on Thursday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m., at Rockweed Center, 156 High Street. The free event is sponsored by Shannaghe, Belfast’s residency for artists and environmentalists. Space is limited, so those who are interested in attending should RSVP at Shannaghe.me_at_gmail.com.

Currently, Fischer helps edit a bimonthly magazine distributed to federal prisons and serves as a faculty member of the Odyssey Project, a free college credit program for income-eligible adults. He’s an Illinois Humanities Envisioning Justice fellow and Luminarts Cultural Foundation fellow, and he was a finalist for the PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship.

Named after the historical storytellers of Ireland, Shannaghe is a solo residency for artists, writers, and environmentalists located in a renovated horse barn in Belfast. Artists apply to live and work in the space. Past residents include Illinois Paula Carter, author of No Relation, and Maine poet Steve Langan, who has published four books of poetry, including Bedtime Stories.
