CAMDEN — Camden Falls Gallery presents “Into the Woods”, an exhibition opening on Thursday, June 20, from 5 to 7 p.m., during Camden‘s First Friday Art. The show will run through July 3. The show will feature works by Charles Fenner Ball, Susan Graeber, Liz Hoag, and Jennifer Van Cor.

“Maine is often heralded for its jagged, rocky coastline but some artists look to Maine’s unique woodlands for inspiration, whether it be the pines, spruce and firs dotting the shoreline and islands, or the thickly carpeted hardwood forests found more inland,” says gallery owner Howard Gallagher, in a news release.

Charles Fenner Ball’s style is considered representational but his landscapes are self-described as being somewhere between real and imagined. He finds the Maine coastline rewarding and fun to paint, but he’s more often drawn to the higher elevations and its shaded glens, wetlands, brooks and marshes. The works featured in this show feature his luminous birch trees, quaking aspens and blueberry barrens that he finds compelling in all seasons.

Susan Graeber has been drawn to Maine for over 30 years, and feel most at peace and stimulated by the landscape. The light in Maryland where she lives most of the year is diffuse, hazy. She prefers the brilliant and crisp light in Maine. She finds that there is a mystery of what is going on behind the foreground in the landscape. Her works in this show reflect the influence of Maine painters Neil Welliver and Fairfield Porter.

Liz Hoag is a Maine artist who joined the gallery last year. Her subject matter began focusing on trees many years ago due to their endless possibilities. She is compelled by the negative space that trees produce and allows her to lead the viewer to a specific area of focus. She enjoys seeing THROUGH trees to the complexities of the composition and observing the dappling patterns of light and shade.

Jennifer Van Cor lives in New Hampshire but is endlessly inspired by Maine’s landscape where she visits with family and friends often. Her distinct style renders land, sea, and sky in multi-faceted bursts of color that seem to dance across the canvas. Van Cor’s mosaic-like works in this show feature treescapes along her beloved Maine inlets and islands.

    Camden Falls Gallery is open daily, 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
