Kara George, Thomaston Town Manager, issued the following on current operations of Dragon Products in Thomaston:

I am pleased to provide an update on the current operations of Dragon Cement in Thomaston, following recent discussions with the company's Executive Vice President from South Carolina.

Distribution Model: Dragon Cement has successfully transitioned to a new business model focused on distribution and storage. Cement is now imported from overseas to Searsport, and transported to Thomaston. The company maintains a robust customer base and a stable cement market in Maine, ensuring continued success.

Local Workforce: The recent employee layoffs will conclude at the end of this month. Moving forward, Dragon Cement will employ 15-20 workers to manage the distribution plant.

Environmental Compliance and Wastewater Discharge: Dragon Cement continues to maintain its wastewater collection system and is compliant with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, thanks to the efforts of Environmental Manager Michael Martunas. The quarry remains unused, with no plans for closure. With manufacturing idled, all air licenses are clear, and there are no violations.

Property Ownership and Intentions: Dragon Cement has no plans to abandon or sell the Thomaston plant. The Rockland property is cleaned up and all operations there are idled. The company is committed to our community and will continue to honor its responsibilities.

In conclusion, Dragon Cement’s shift to a distribution-focused model is proving successful, ensuring the plant's future viability. As your Town Manager, I will keep you updated on the company's activities.
