Rockland installs new sharrows, announces second bike planning public meeting

ROCKLAND — The City of Rockland will host a public Zoom meeting on Tuesday, July 30, from 5 - 6:30 p.m., to present the preliminary Rockland Bike Route Network Development Plan. All are encouraged to attend to learn more about the proposed network and the recommendations included in the preliminary Plan.

The City’s Public Services Department got an early start implementing recommendations included in the preliminary plan, and has incorporated striping recommendations included in the preliminary plan into the City’s 5-year paving plan. Public Services installed sharrows on eight network streets; look for newly painted sharrows on North Main Street, Pleasant Street, Limerock Street, Main Street, Union Street, Talbot Avenue, Broadway, and Birch Street.

Sharrows are road markings used to alert drivers to the presence of bicyclists.

“When you see a sharrow, it means ‘share the road!’ and you should expect to see bicyclists,” said the City, in a news release.

The preliminary Bike Route Network Development Plan is available for review at www.rocklandmaine.gov/bike. Comments on the preliminary plan can be sent to sustainability@rocklandmaine.gov. All are invited to attend the July 30 public meeting to share their input on the preliminary Plan and hear more about the City’s progress towards making Rockland a safer and more enjoyable place to bike.
