NORTHPORT — John L. Dean, 88 of Northport, died at Togus VA Sept. 25, 2013. He was born in Northport April 16, 1925, to the late Roscoe and Hazel (Morse) Dean.

John served in the U.S. Army and was a Purple Heart recipient after being wounded in World War II during the Battle of the Bulge. He also served as an MP at the Nuremberg Trials. After the military, he came home to take care of the family farm after his father died in 1955.

Later in life John owned his own wood business, driving a wood truck.

He enjoyed gardening, reading and telling stories.

John was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn Bonin Dean, in 1982; his two children, Katherine and John Jr.; his siblings, Kenneth Dean, Earl Dean and Bertha Bonin; and a special friend, Lydia Pendleton.

He is survived by his children, Sandra Volskay and her husband, Tim, of Vero Beach, Fla., Susan Smith and her husband, Daniel, of Northport, Ronald Dean of Stillwater, Linda Dean of Belfast and Jack Dean and his wife, Angel, of Brewer; his sister, Barbara Reilly and her husband, Peter, of Orlando; six grandchildren, Kristy, Lucas, Mallie, Mariah, Taylor and Allie; four great-grandchildren, Abbagail, Asela, Jackson and Jacob; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation Friday Oct. 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Riposta Funeral Home ,182 Waldo Ave. in Belfast, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Committal at Northport cemetery will follow with military honors.
