Gentleman Brawlers bring Afrofunk and indie dance grooves to Strand stage, Sept. 21

ROCKLAND — Brooklyn collective Gentleman Brawlers will bring their distinct brand of Afrofunk and indie dance music to the Strand Theatre on Saturday, Sept 21, at 7:30 p.m. Gentleman Brawlers’ music, described as “Fela Kuti meets Talking Heads,” is a sonic blend of disco-based horn lines, sticky highlife guitar, and polyrhythms from West Africa, Trinidad, and Brazil. The theater will remove some seats for this show, to make room for dancing.

Led by creative duo Becca Fox and Matt Walsh, Gentleman Brawlers loves to engage an audience; their live shows ignite a community-based, improvisational energy, according to the Strand, in a news release.

The release says: “If you can MOVE you can DANCE!” shouts an exuberant Fox from the stage — or from the dance floor, where she’s joined the crowd.

Acclaimed by NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest & WNYC’s The Greene Space, the band has opened for Cimafunk and Grammy award-winning artists Los Amigos Invisibles & Fantastic Negrito at Brooklyn Bowl, Live at the Archway Festival in Dumbo, and performed at Pier 1 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side for Summer on the Hudson.

Concert series sponsorship support has been generously provided by First National Bank and First National Wealth Management.

Tickets are $22/Advance, $25/Day of Show.. Beer and wine are available at concessions. To buy tickets, or for more information, visit www.rocklandstrand.com or call (207) 594-0070.  The Strand Theatre is located at 345 Main Street, Rockland.
