BELFAST — Belfast Maskers presents John M. Synge's groundbreaking play, "Playboy of the Western World," directed by Michael Toner, at the Basil Burwell Community Theater, 17 Court Street, Belfast, Maine. This production runs from August 30 through September 8, 2024, “inviting Maine audiences to experience a seminal work that has left an indelible mark on modern drama,” said Maskers, in a news release.

First performed at Dublin's Abbey Theatre in 1907, the play is set in a small village on the west coast of Ireland, where the ordinary lives of the villagers are upended by the arrival of Christy Mahon (Tyler Johnstone), a young man who claims to have killed his father. Christy’s tale captivates the villagers and elevates him to the status of a local hero. At the heart of the story is Pegeen Mike (Greta Brown), the strong-willed and sharp-tongued daughter of the village tavern keeper, who finds herself drawn to his audacious spirit.

The play’s initial reception was nothing short of explosive, said Maskers. Dublin audiences, shocked by its portrayal of rural Irish life and its subversion of traditional values, responded with outrage, leading to riots during its early performances. Yet, what was once seen as a scandalous affront to Irish identity has since been recognized as a masterpiece, celebrated for its poetic language, rich characterizations, and its incisive critique of societal norms.

John M. Synge, a central figure in the Irish Literary Revival, was a playwright and poet whose works continue to resonate for their exploration of the human condition and the harsh realities of rural life. Synge's experiences shaped his portrayal of Irish characters, infusing them with authenticity and complexity.

“Playboy of the Western World is perhaps his most enduring work, a play that captures both the beauty and brutality of life in the Irish countryside,” said Maskers.

Director Michael Toner, known for his deep connection to Irish theater, is bringing a nuanced approach to this production, emphasizing the emotional depth of the characters and their relationships.

"In the midst of a riotous comic atmosphere, reflecting the earthy humor of the rural Irish people and their shared humanity, is a timeless coming-of-age story,” said Maskers. “Not only of a young man, but of a young woman. Through this lens, Playboy of the Western World becomes not just a story about Christy Mahon’s transformation, but also about Pegeen’s complex experiences and the fallout afterward.
