OAKLAND — The Camden-Rockport chess team enjoyed success over the weekend at the Maine Scholastic Individual Chess Championships at Messalonskee Middle School in Oakland.

Fifth grade student Victor Clayton was crowned as the K-5 state champion, going undefeated during the Saturday, March 19 event. By winning the event, Clayton will now represent the state at the Rockefeller National Tournament of K-5 champions in Rancho Mirage, California in August.

This is the third consecutive year that the state K-5 champion has come from the Camden-Rockport team, according to Kate Ervin Kaplan.

Oliver Mitchell and Will Kaplan also scored two points each in the Saturday event.

In the middle school section, Miles Kaplan earned third place, which was a very strong performance for a sixth grader Kaplan reported. Walter Field also scored three points in this event.

Camden-Rockport Middle School earned third place in the annual Scholastic Grand Prix.

“This was quite impressive, given that our team amassed all points in the month of March alone,” Kaplan reported, while noting other teams had been earning points since October.
