THOMASTON — It is a sad time for the Moss family, our friends, and the greater community as we mourn the departure of Carol Jean Moss, 82, of Thomaston, Maine. Survived by three sons and two grandchildren, she passed into God’s graces on March 26, 2024 after a long illness.

Always courageous in life, always supportive to anyone in need, she was the steadfast foundation of the Moss family up until the very end. Her dedication and ability to teach young minds was her passion in life, fostering creativity and imagination in all whom she met.

Born on December 23, 1942, she grew up in Everett, Massachusetts to the parents of Arthur J. and Florence J. Wilson, graduating from Everett High in 1960. She attended State College at Boston, graduating in June 1964 with a Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education and a Minor in Music.

After beginning her career as a second and third grade teacher at the Adams School in Everett, Carol met and married Eivind Roy Moss Jr., of Thomaston, in 1966 and moved to Maine to start a family.

While raising three sons, she worked in the SAD #5 Owl’s Head district and opened the Bambi Nursery School for preschoolers from her home in Thomaston.

Her love for the Christian faith led her to continue her higher educational pursuits at the Bangor Theological Seminary and New York Theological Seminary, graduating in May of 1986 with a Masters Degree in Professional Studies.

Her life’s work included teaching troubled youth at Bancroft North School in Owls Head, and as a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine. She served as the director of Christian Education at the Thomaston Federated Church, as well as teaching Sunday school at the Broad Cove Church in Cushing in later years. One of her favorite places to enjoy the Maine summer was at Pilgrim Lodge Christian Camp in West Gardner, Maine where she acted as camp dean for several summers.

Carol educated many youths in the SAD #50 school district, working as a migrant teacher and playing a key role in certifying new teachers at the Cushing School where she taught 1st and 2nd grade until retiring in 2004.

Carol enjoyed reading, doing crafts such as quilling, and spending good times with her family friends in her home overlooking the St. George river. She extended her unconditional love to birds and all animals, including her cats Skye and Raven. She leaves a lasting legacy of great human capital wealth invested in the upbringing and education of so many kids in the surrounding area, her life’s mission.

–We will love and miss you always and dearly–

Carol was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Florence Wilson, and her sister, Joan Curtis of Everett, Massachusetts.

She is survived by her three sons: Stewart M. Moss of Gray, Randall A. Moss of Thomaston, and Ivar B. Moss of Gray; as well as her grandson, Coty Demmons of Thomaston, and granddaughter, Sakira.

Support from Bob Jean and Darcy Payne was instrumental in her final years, we are forever grateful to their kindness and true friendship.

Friends are welcome to join the family for a grave side memorial service and Celebration of Carol’s life in Thomaston this spring.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Carol’s memory to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
