UNION — On Friday, March 26, 2021, at 3:20 p.m., the Knox County Regional Communications Center received a call of a 2 vehicle head-on crash and the possibility of two entrapped occupants. Deputies with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Upon arriving, two vehicles were found to be on the bridge blocking the entire roadway, and neither occupant waa entrapped, though one needed assistance in getting out.

For approximately 75 minutes following the two-vehicle crash, Union and Washington fire department volunteers rerouted traffic at Carroll Road and Washington Road. In between these cross streets, Shepard Hill meanders around a bend and over a bridge, where the crash took place.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigation of the crash revealed that a 2004 Jeep, operated by Dana St. Amand, 24, of Vassalboro, was traveling south on the Old Union Road towards Union.

Deputies believe St. Amand crossed the town line onto the Shepard Hill Rd in Union.

A 2009 Jeep being operated by Leo Thibodeau, 65, of Washington, was traveling north on Shepard Hill Road. Thibodeau encountered St. Amand on a curve at the Union/Washington town line.

St. Amand was alleged to be partially in the wrong lane for an undetermined reason, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say Thibodeau attempted to avoid the collision by taking evasive action; however, was unable to avoid St Amand. The vehicles collided head on and came to rest on the bridge in the roadway.

St. Amand appeared to have suffered cuts and abrasions to his head and was transported to PBMC for treatment of injuries by Union EMS, according to the Sheriff’s Office; and injuries did not appear to be life threatening. His vehicle was totaled in the crash and was towed.

Thibobeau had a more serious injury with possible broken bones, and was transported to PBMC by Waldoboro EMS. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening either, according to the KCSO. His vehicle is a total loss and was towed.

Knox County Dispatch coordinated the rescue efforts of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office who was assisted at the scene by Union Fire, Union EMS, Washington Fire, Waldoboro EMS and Hometown Towing.

The crash is still under investigation, charges are pending.
