a birding “hotspot”

Kristen Lindquist to present Migrating Fall Birds of Mohegan

Event has passed

CUSHING — Writer and naturalist Kristen Lindquist will describe the special pleasures of observing the fall migration of birds on Monhegan Island in an illustrated talk, “Fall Birds of Monhegan.”

The free event, open to the public, takes place Wednesday, August 23, at 6:30 p.m., at the Cushing Public Library.

An avid birder who has guided outings around the state, Lindquist has spent almost every spring and fall migration for the past 25 years on Monhegan and will share her experiences and photographs from that time. She encourages visits to this birding “hotspot” just ten miles offshore, and her narrated slideshow will provide insight into what species can be found on the island in the fall and offer tips to help plan individual adventures.

Lindquist was the first woman member of the Maine Bird Records Committee and wrote the Knox County chapter for the recently published Birdwatching in Maine: A Site Guide.

She has written extensively on natural history, including a monthly column in local newspapers for more than 15 years and two Maine Press Association awards for outdoor features. She is also an award-winning poet, notably with several volumes of haiku and contributions to various poetry publications. Since 2009 she has maintained a daily haiku blog and also teaches and leads haiku workshops around the state.
