I-95 incidents: crash and car fire with small explosions attributed to ammunition

    Maine State Police responded to two morning incidents Jan. 5 on I-95.

    Waterville Crash

    On Jan. 5, 2021, at approximately 7:30 a.m., a Trooper from Troop C came upon a crash near the southbound on-ramp near exit 130.

    The investigation revealed that Kevin Swift, 29, of Whitefield, attempted to pass a vehicle driven by Andrei Llantro, 19, of Waterville has he yielded while entering the interstate.

    Swift passed Llantro’s vehicle and struck a vehicle that was driven by Margeret Thomas, 34, of Winslow, as she traveled southbound, according to the police report.

    Thomas’s vehicle came to rest in the middle of both southbound lanes, facing north and in the path of a tractor-trailer truck being driven by William Carlson, 63, of Wells, who narrowly avoided striking Thomas’s vehicle by maneuvering his truck into the median.

     

    Car Fire with ammunition

    On Jan. 5, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Cpl. Derrick Record responded to a car fire at mile marker 119 northbound.

    When he arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed and flame, but the driver was safely out of the vehicle.

    Multiple small explosions occurred, due to what is believed to be ammunition in the car, police said.

    The interstate was shut down in order to clear the fire and keep motorists safe. The 2012 Subaru Outback was destroyed in the fire.
