CAMDEN — Rozalia Project Executive Director Ashley Sullivan will discuss how her organization is cleaning ocean waters in the Gulf of Maine and beyond during a free Sunset Seminar presentation Wednesday, July 24, at 7 p.m., at the Camden Yacht Club.

“Trash, derelict fishing gear, and microplastic are ubiquitous in the marine environment, infiltrating the marine food web and landing on our plates,” said the Yacht Club, in a news release.

The Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, a nonprofit organization based in Vermont and Maine, applies microplastic research and data-driven cleanups to combat the menace of marine debris. Sullivan and her team have worked from the Gulf of Maine to Miami and the shores of Lake Champlain to the North Pole to Antarctica.

Learn during this presentation about how the Rozalia Project has developed the Cora Ball, a consumer-scale solution to microfiber pollution; pioneered educational programs; and launched a global citizen science microplastic mapping and monitoring program. Ashley will explain steps everyone can take to protect our one big ocean in Camden and beyond.

Sullivan, a lifelong sailor and 60-ton USCG captain grew up on an island in South Florida. She has designed, implemented, and managed environmental education programs and multi-stakeholder projects for 24 years. As one of the captains aboard Rozalia Project’s oceanographic research sailing vessel, American Promise, she travels the US to recover marine debris, collect data, and share the Rozalia Project story.

The Yacht Club, located at 68 Bay View Street, hosts the nonprofit Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program (CAYSP), open to all young people in the community.
