Criterion Film Series presents a double feature “Wes Fest” on Aug. 18

ROCKLAND — The Criterion Series, a monthly film series sponsored by The Criterion Collection, continues with a double-feature screening of two films by acclaimed director Wes Anderson on Sunday, August 18. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) will be shown at 2 p.m., and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) will be screened at 4:30 p.m.

Criterion Series films are hosted in person by TCM (Turner Classic Movies) film presenter, and Strand Board Member Alicia Malone or House Manager Liz McLeod.

In The Royal Tenenbaums, Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three extraordinary children (Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson) before they separated. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father’s fault. The Royal Tenenbaums is the story of the family’s sudden, unexpected reunion one recent winter. The film is rated R.

Set in the 1930s, The Grand Budapest Hotel is a popular European ski resort presided over by concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes). Zero, a junior lobby boy, becomes Gustave's friend and protege. Gustave prides himself on providing first-class service to the hotel's guests, including satisfying the sexual needs of the many elderly women who stay there. When one of Gustave's lovers dies mysteriously, Gustave finds himself the recipient of a priceless painting and the chief suspect in her murder. The film also features Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, and Tilda Swinton. It is rated R.
