2024 Belfast High School graduate Kalli-Alexis Daley, a student in Waldo County Technical Center’s (WCTC) Building Construction program, recently built planters for the town of Brooks. This project was organized by WCTC’s Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) Program, which connects Tech Center students with local businesses to explore career opportunities.  

The planters will be placed by the town’s park entrance as part of a major renovation of the community space. Town Selectman Mike Switzer explained that a new playground and snack shack are in the works, as well as other improvements. The town hopes these upgrades will be completed for the Brooks annual Independence Day Parade and celebration.

When asked about the process of building the planters, Kalli stated that it was a learning experience. She discovered that it made more sense to use screws than nails part way through and ended up switching out her tools during the project. Her Building Construction instructor, Mark Bolster, expressed how great it is for Kalli’s handiwork to be at the town park. Many students from WCTC live in Brooks and will see the planters on a regular basis. 

Kalli plans to attend Eastern Maine Community College for Building Construction in the fall and is currently working at Mathews Brothers in Belfast.
