The family of Mary Staples announce her peaceful passing on August 19, 2023 at the age of 91. The family and community experienced a profound loss this week of the one fondly referred to as “Mother Mary.” Her compassionate nature and instinct to care for others earned her this affectionate nickname.

Mary was born February 23, 1932 to Cedric and Norma Holloway of Lincolnville, Maine. She attended the one-room school house in Lincolnville Center and later graduated from Camden High School.

Mary grew up working on her family farm in Lincolnville. While raising her own family she wore many hats such as School Bus Driver, Social Worker, Inn Keeper and operated her own Independent Cleaning Service.

Her passions included gardening, canning, cooking, reading, bird watching, and making her famous donuts. All four-legged friends had a place in her heart.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Herbert L. Libby; daughter Norma Leigh Stinson; and brother, John Holloway.

Mary is survived by her husband Stephen A. Staples of Milo, Maine; sister, Patricia Wheaton of Belfast, ME; sister-in-law, Jane Holloway of Bar Harbor, Maine; son Parker & Margaret Libby of Oregon; son Eric & Mary Libby of Michigan; son Daryl Libby & Joni Dyer of Lincolnville, Maine; daughter Stacy Foss of Lincolnville, Maine & Bill Foss of Belfast, Maine; son Corey & Kelley Staples of Hermon, Maine; daughter Kim & Charles Wilmire of Delaware; son Chris & Marianne Staples of Searsmont, Maine; daughter Joselyn Staples of Appleton, Maine; son Andrew & Lyonelle Staples of Appleton, Maine; son-in-law, Ed Stinson of Lincolnville, Maine; dear-friend, Patricia Fogg of Rockport, Maine; Additionally 23 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and friends.

As we bid farewell to our Mum, we take comfort in knowing she will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of those who loved her. Mary’s love, witty sense of humor, and dedication to family and friends will forever guide and inspire us.
