OWLS HEAD — LeRoy “Roy” Rogers, 83, lifelong Owls Head resident, died peacefully, Thursday, October 28, 2021 at his home.

Born in Rockland, December 6, 1937 he was the son of Clarence and Addie Williams Rogers. Educated in Rockland Schools he attended Rockland High School.

On August 1, 1959, Roy married Marla Haskins under the apple trees at his parent’s home in Owls Head. Shortly after their marriage, Roy enlisted in the U.S. Army serving honorably in Vietnam. Together he and Marla lived in various locations throughout the world returning to Maine in 1966. In 1977, Roy purchased this childhood home, caring for his aging parents and residing there ever since.

Roy spent much of his career on the ocean, captaining his own lobster boat, seining, and fishing with commercial scallop and sword fish boats out of Nantucket in the off season. Always a hard worker, he also owned his own small engine repair shop. He had a strong work ethic and was known for his fair way of doing business. Even when customers would offer him more for his services, he never took it. He believed in only being paid for the work he’d done, nothing more. He could fix anything, and always had a tinkering project going. He often bought “junk” to fix up and make run again. Anything from radios to tractors, Roy could fix it.

Throughout his life, he was a successful gardener, growing bountiful vegetables every year. He never ate junk food, and always put his garden to good use. At one point he even raised rabbits for meat, but had soft spot for them, often ending up with more live rabbits than he needed. He tried his hand at bee keeping, but wasn’t so successful in that endeavor, usually buying more bees each year to keep the hive going.

His sons remember he was a little bit stubborn, a bit impulsive, and enjoyed a good Rum and Coke until the very end. He was a true “Maine character,” and will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Predeceased by his wife, Marla, in 2014; a daughter-in-law, Carol Rogers; a brother, Alton Rogers; his sister and brother-in-law Marion and Ray Johnson; Roy is survived by his sons, David Rogers and his wife Beth of Cushing, Kenneth Rogers and his wife Marilyn of Minot, Michael Rogers of Rockland, Robert Rogers and his partner Jean Smail of Monmouth; a former daughter-in-law, Helen Rogers; a brother, Charles Rogers and his wife Donna of Matinicus Island; eleven grandchildren, Crystal, Brittany, Lisa, Sara, Bethany, Robert, Paul, Mary, David, Cameron and Catherine; 15 great-grandchildren; and as well as several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visit Monday, November 8, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.  In honor of Roy’s service to our Country, the Maine Army Funeral Honors Team will present Military Honors at 6 p.m.
