30th-anniversary Salt Bay Chamberfest

Violinist, Grammy winner Jennifer Koh to perform at Strand Theatre, Aug. 15

ROCKLAND — Violinist Jennifer Koh, Grammy Award winner and Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year, will give a solo violin recital Thursday, Aug. 15, at 5 p.m., at the Strand Theatre, in Rockland. It will feature work by J.S. Bach from his Partitas and Sonatas for Solo Violin. The performance is part of this year’s 30th-anniversary Salt Bay Chamberfest, an annual two-week festival based in Damariscotta.

“Koh is known for her intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance,” said Salt Bay Chamberfest, in a news release. “A forward-thinking artist, she explores a broad and eclectic repertoire while promoting equity and inclusivity in classical music. She has expanded the contemporary violin repertoire through a wide range of commissioning projects, and has premiered more than 100 works written especially for her.”

Koh’s series include Bach and Beyond, which traces the history of the solo violin repertoire from Bach’s sonatas and partitas to pieces by 20th- and 21st-century composers; The New American Concerto, which invites a diverse collective of composers to examine socio-cultural topics relevant to today’s American life through the form of the violin concerto; and Alone Together, which comprised a commissioning project, performance, and Grammy Award-winning recording series in support of composers during the coronavirus crisis.

She has appeared with orchestras worldwide, including the New York, Los Angeles, and Helsinki philharmonics; Cleveland, Mariinsky, Minnesota, Philadelphia, and Philharmonia (London) orchestras; and Atlanta, Baltimore, BBC, Chicago, Cincinnati, National, New World, NHK, RAI (Torino), and Singapore symphonies. She is also the Artistic Director and Founder of the nonprofit arco collaborative. Koh has won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the Concert Artists Guild Competition, and an Avery Fisher Career Grant. A graduate of Oberlin College, she studied at the Curtis Institute, where she worked extensively with Jaime Laredo and Felix Galimir.
