Paul “Pete” Sutherland Hurlburt, obituary

LEESBURG, Florida — Paul “Pete” Sutherland Hurlburt passed away on January 1, 2024 at his home in Leesburg, Florida.

Mr. Hurlburt was born on April 14, 1939 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Paul S. and Gertrude “Trudy” Hurlburt.

He attended his early elementary school years in Massachusetts and graduated from Camden Maine High School in 1957. He graduated from Farmington State Teachers College in 1961, obtaining his Master’s Degree in elementary principalship in 1968 and a Certificate of Advanced Study in school superintendency in 1973 from the University of Maine Orono.

His educational career led him to 7 years of teaching, followed by serving as the principal of Rockport Elementary School and Brunswick Junior High. He later served as Superintendent of Schools in Bingham and Thomaston. Following that, Mr. Hurlburt became an Associate Director of Maine School Management overseeing insurance and labor relations for all Maine public schools.

He retired in 1996 and formed his own labor relations consulting business known as Hurlburt and Hurlburt. He also served on the Maine Board of Arbitration and Conciliation from 1996-1999.

The Hurlburts retired to their Norton’s Pond home in Lincolnville and later enjoyed a long Florida retirement in Leesburg, where Pete served on many community boards, serving as President of Hawthorne’s Board for several years.

Pete was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan, enjoyed spending time outdoors, and being upta camp.

He was married to the former Patricia Harvey of Dover-Foxcroft on June 17, 1961. The couple has two sons, Paul E. Hurlburt of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Timothy P. Hurlburt and daughter-in-law Kim Clark of Lincolnville, Maine.

He is predeceased by two infant daughters; and his sisters, Nancy Whitney and Sally Hurlburt.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s name can be made to the March of Dimes or the Spina Bifida Association.
