Helen M. Fogarty Wing, obituary

OWLS HEAD — Helen M. Fogarty Wing, 96, died peacefully, Friday, June 28, 2024 at the Owls Head Homestead, following a brief illness.

Born in Albion, July 30, 1927, she was the fifth child of seven born to William and Ida Clark Copeland. Educated locally, she left high school her senior year. Years later, Helen returned to high school with her son-in-law, Ron and together they earned diplomas from Georges Valley High School.

Helen began her career working the counter at Woolworths before moving on to the telephone company. She finished her career in the retail field, working for multiple businesses.

On October 2, 1947, Helen married Robert H. Fogarty at the First Baptist Church in Rockland. Together Helen and Robert made their home in several locations over the years, residing in Rockland, Owls Head, Thomaston
and Connecticut. Mr. Fogarty passed away in 1982. 

Later in life, Helen married Percy Wing on December 1, 1990. The pair made their home in Mechanic Falls where they lived until his passing in 1997. 

Helen was a talented seamstress, always using her skills to help others. She enjoyed knitting lap robes for residents at local nursing homes and scarves for local Special Olympic participants. She also enjoyed gardening in her spare time.

She was an active member of Owls Head Baptist Church for many years. She began by attending Bible School in the summer as a child when her family vacationed at Holiday Beach. Her strong faith in her Lord and Savior has sustained her through many of life’s trials. 

Family was Helen’s number one priority, and they were always very important to her. She was a loving and supportive part of her nieces and nephews’ lives, creating a special bond that lasted their entire lives. She loved traveling to visit her daughter in Florida and California whenever she could. 

Helen will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Predeceased by two husbands; all her siblings: Christine, William, Fannie, Aggie, Fred, and Millie; a son-in-law, Kendall McLain; and a grandson, Lance McLain. 

Helen is survived by her children, Brenda McLain, Marion Makie and her husband Ronald all of Owls Head, Robert C. Fogarty of Warren; grandchildren Amy McLain of Owls Head, Travis Makie of Grants Pass, Oregon, Todd Makie and his wife Sarah of Orlando, Florida, Cristai Suinn of Carlsbad, California; a special step-grandson, John Hawley and his wife Michelle of Oxford, Maine; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, her beloved church family, and a large loving extended family. 

A celebration of Helen’s life will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 11 a.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Pastor Alex Oakes will officiate.
