CAMDEN — The acclaimed Happenstance Theater is coming back to the Camden Opera House for a free family performance. Happenstance will present its “pocket-sized” circus clown show “Preposterous!” Sunday, June 30, at 3 p.m., at the downtown opera house, 29 Elm St. Admission is free, thanks to the Camden Opera House’s Community Arts Fund.

“Preposterous!” is a sophisticated, yet delightfully ridiculous, delight for all ages, according to the Opera House, in a news release.

“The five-person Happenstance troupe evokes circuses of old, transforming themselves into a human calliope; doing the classic circus mirror routine with a twist; making live music and sound effects; and executing a very satisfying slow-motion number involving, yes, a pie,” said the release.

Fun for all ages, “Preposterous! premiered in the summer of 2017 at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and has been performed at The National Theatre in Washington, D.C., as well as around New England and the Mid-Atlantic.

The show is general admission, and fun-loving folks of all ages are invited to just come to the opera house for this special Sunday matinee – doors will open 2:30 p.m. Those looking for wheelchair and other accessible seating options are encouraged to call 236-3154 or send an email to dernest@camdenmaine.gov ahead of time.

Camden Opera House’s Community Arts Fund supports free events, including August’s Summer Sounds concert series, the Blue Café, Jazz in June’s free events and more; as well as the Summer Theater Camp.

Donations are welcomed during ticket purchase and via the website camdenoperahouse.com.
