CAMDEN — Charles Davis “Dave” Thomas, 93, died at home on February 8, 2022 in the company of his wife, Karin, and son, Cord.

Dave came to Camden in 1977 as the editor in chief of Down East Magazine bringing the culture of Maine to homes around the country. Born in Detroit, Michigan to Charles Roy Thomas and Nellie Davis Thomas, he graduated from the University of Michigan, also attended by his brother, Rich Thomas.

Dave pursued a career in journalism in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia following his service in the U.S. Army.

He met his life partner in New York City where they began a 66-year journey together which included publishing People of the First Man, describing the life of the Plains Indians, and Moon: Man’s Greatest Adventure about the global race to space.

Dave had a profound admiration for Maine where he enjoyed boating in Penobscot Bay, the view of Camden Harbor and hikes in the Camden Hills. Following his retirement from Down East Magazine, Dave and Karin traveled extensively, particularly enjoying trekking in the Himalayas.

Dave was on the board of the Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) where he was actively engaged in Maine’s artist community.

Donations may be made in Dave’s memory to the Center for Maine Contemporary Art or the Coastal Mountains Land Trust.
