ROCKPORT — Pen Bay Medical Center’s Bay View Café is now offering a selection of foods from Maine farms for purchase in its new “Buy Local” food stand.

Patients, visitors and care team members will be able to pick up small bags of local coffee, flour, beans, granola, popcorn and more. The Bay View Café is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

According the Sheila Costello, director of nutrition services for Pen Bay and Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, supporting local agriculture is part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to the Knox County community.

“These local food stands allow us to support our community and local farms and provide local foods that you may not be able to find in grocery stores,” she said, in a news release. “Buying local supports the local economy, and in this case it also helps create a sustainable food system.”

The Bay View Café began offering the local fare last month. Costello said the products have been moving quickly and she hopes to expand the offerings in the near future.
