STOCKTON SPRINGS — Stockton Springs Community Library (SSCL) will present author Cathie Pelletier reading from and discussing her work on Sunday, July 28, at 2 p.m. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is required. Stop into the library or call 207-567-4147 during open hours to reserve your seat.

Cathie Pelletier was born and raised on the banks of the St. John River, at the end of the road in Northern Maine. She is the author of twelve novels, including The Funeral Makers (a New York Times Notable Book), The Weight of Winter (winner of the New England Book Award) and Running the Bulls (winner of the Paterson Prize for Fiction). With theoretical physicist S. James Gates Jr, she co-authored Proving Einstein Right, winner of the Brown University Book Award. After years of living in Nashville, Tennessee Toronto, Canada and Eastman, Quebec, she  returned to Allagash, Maine and the family homestead where she was born.

Under the pseudonym of K. C. McKinnon she wrote two novels, Dancing at the Harvest Moon and Candles on Bay Street, both published by Doubleday, the latter earning a million-dollar advance. The first McKinnon novel was translated into 19 languages and was a CBS TV film starring Jacqueline Bisset, Valerie Harper, and Eric Mabius. The second was translated into 10 languages and was a Hallmark Hall of Fame film starring Alicia Silverstone.

“Northeaster is Cathie Pelletier’s breathtaking account of the 1952 snowstorm that blanketed New England, and offers a valuable reminder about nature’s capacity for destruction as well as insight into the human instinct for preservation and compassion,” said SSCL, in a news release.

Pelletier’s other books include The Summer Experiment and A Year After Henry.

Pelletier created and sold to Simon & Schuster a book with country music icon Tanya Tucker, titled 100 Ways to Beat the Blues. She co-wrote The Christmas Note with her friend, the late Skeeter Davis, singer and Grand Ole Opry legend. She has co-written the memoir, The Ragin' Cajun, with her friend Doug Kershaw, the legendary fiddler-singer. She has sold and helped with the collaboration of Cows: A Rumination, with her long-time friend and collaborator Carl Hileman.

Pelletier has had songs recorded by David Byrne (of the Talking Heads), the Texas Tornadoes, the Glaser Brothers, and others. She has collaborated on songs with Gene Nelson, whose "18 Wheels & A Dozen Roses," written with brother Paul Nelson and a number #1 hit for Kathy Mattea, was voted Song of the Year.

Pelletier will have books available to purchase at the library presentation.

Pre-register at 207-567-4147 to reserve your seat.
