ROCKLAND — The Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame has announced the five male and five female finalists for the 2013 High School Athlete of the Year.

The finalists were recently selected by the Hall of Fame's board of directors after considering a number of student athletes for the honor. High schools from within the Midcoast area (Oceanside, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley, Lincoln Academy, Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro) were asked to nominate two male and two female student- of-year athlete candidates. The candidates were then asked to complete a questionnaire and return it to the board to be considered for the honor. Any candidate who did not return the questionnaire was not considered for the award.

The five male finalists include: Alex Crans of Camden Hills, Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy, Jonathan Hendrickson-Belloguet of Medomak Valley, Sam Melkin of Oceanside and Coleman Powers of Camden Hills. The five female finalists are: Kristina Alex of Camden Hills, Kennadi Grover of Oceanside, Amanda Hendrickson-Belloguet of Medomak Valley, Jordan Knowlton of Camden Hills and Kara Mullin of Lincoln Academy.

Alex Crans was a member of the Camden Hills football, basketball and baseball teams. Crans, a four-year varsity member of the football team, led the team in rushing his senior year when he was named the team's MVP and the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl. He was also a member of the 2011 Class B State Championship basketball and has been named to the league's All Academic team for all three sports. Crans is currently attending the U.S. Naval Academy.

Jordan Friedland specialized in tennis at Lincoln Academy, capturing two Maine High School singles Championships and going undefeated during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Friedland was selected the High School Player of the Year by the Maine Sunday Telegram for his last two years of high school, was named his team's MVP for four straight seasons, and did not lose a regular season match during his entire four-year high school career.  He is currently playing college tennis at Stanford.

He was also a three-year member of the varsity basketball team and was second in scoring while leading the team in rebounding during his senior year.

Coleman Powers was a member of the football, wrestling and baseball teams at Camden Hills. Powers had his greatest success on the wrestling mat, finishing third in the state in his weight class during his freshman and sophomore years. He was second in the state during his junior season and was the individual Class B State Champion last year, while finishing sixth in New England.

Kristina Alex of Camden Hills played soccer, basketball and lacrosse. Alex had her most success on the soccer field, where she was three-time All KVAC first team member and the KVAC Player of the Year in 2012. Alex was also a three-year member of the basketball and lacrosse squads and was named KVAC All Academic in all three sports.
