Stephen K. Mazzeo, obituary

THOMASTON — Stephen K. Mazzeo, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 5, 2023 at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a period of declining health.

Born in Rockland, January 23, 1946 he was the son of Natale and Ruth Mazzeo. Graduating from Rockland High School in 1964 and shortly after, joined the United States Air Force, he served as an Air Policeman attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served his country honorably from 1966 until 1970. Steve married Diane Smith in 1970 and they resided in Thomaston since 1977.

Stephen earned his associate degree from Thomas College after his discharge from the Air Force. Steve served Knox County as a Deputy Sheriff rising through the ranks to ultimately serve as Chief Deputy.

In 1986, Stephen and Diane took ownership of Snappy’s Pizza, which they operated together until 1998. To this day, they still get called Mr. and Mrs. Snappy! During this time, he returned to Thomas College and earned his
bachelor’s degree in 1990. Stephen then worked security for MBNA, before returning to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department as the security Deputy at the Knox County Airport, retiring in 2014. He also served on the
Thomaston Board of Selectmen.

Always active, Stephen loved having family around and enjoyed RVing, going to NASCAR races, woodworking, and could frequently be found puttering around his shop.

Stephen was predeceased by his parents, as well as his sister Joy Collins.

He is survived by his wife, Diane of Thomaston; his son Mikial Mazzeo and his wife Lori of Thomaston, his son Anthony Mazzeo and his wife Sarah of Appleton; his grandchildren, Mackenzie Mazzeo of Sebec, Timothy Mazzeo of Rockland; his sister Candace Pepin and her husband Luc of Augusta; his nieces, Stephanie Gibbs and her husband Rodney and their children of Warren, Renee Nelson her husband Justin and their children of Tennessee, Rachael Rende her husband Matthew and their children of Manchester, his nephew Dwight Collins and his wife Beth and their children of Rockport.

Steve will be laid to rest privately.
