Letter to the editor: The Friends of Rockport Public Library say yes

The Board of the Friends of Rockport Library supports referendum question 4, a bond for the new library.  After years of meetings, focus groups, studies by experts, and discussions, we agree the Select Board’s proposal to build the two-story building designed by Reed & Associates at 1 Limerock Street will be a wonderful addition to the town.

Some people believe the building is too small, others say it is too big.  Some want it to be located at the RES site, others believe it has to be in the original location.  Compromises had to be made.  If you study the floor plan the architects have drawn, you will see a plan that maximizes 7,300 square feet of useable space so that the programming can take place there. There will be enough room for the book collection, with room to grow. There will be enough room for the myriad activities that take place in today’s libraries, from high tech to reading to toddlers.

The construction cost is estimated to cost $277 a square foot.   The proposal to divide the cost of the new library between the town and private donors continues Rockport’s history of philanthropy that improves the town for everyone. We think this is a good deal for Rockport.

The role of the Friends is to support the library however we can, whether it is to sell books, bake cookies, raise money or to encourage citizens to vote.

One fact remains: The town needs a new library. On November 8, we recommend the citizens of Rockport vote YES for the bond and help the town build a new library for all.
