VFW removes annual flag display in Belfast
BELFAST — The flags hung in downtown Belfast by Belfast’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Legion Post 43) were taken down Oct. 26, in preparation for the coming winter.
The flags, the majority of which fly from Memorial Day to the end of October, were removed by Commander Jim Roberts, who was assisted by Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) student Brendan Bruns.
Though most of flags hung by the VFW have been removed, those that fly over the route taken by the Veterans Day Parade will remain up until Nov. 11.
In addition to keeping the flags safe from rough weather, the removal of the flags also provides an educational opportunity for JMG students to learn things such as proper storage and identifying any flags that need to be retired.
Roberts notes that the relationship between the local JMG program and VFW has been beneficial to both, including students of Belfast Area High School (BAHS) promoting veteran causes.
Other collaborations include the BAHS marching band participating in the Veterans Day Parade, and an essay contest currently being sponsored by the VFW.
The essay contest, called Voice of Democracy, is a nationwide competition where students are asked to craft an audio-essay featuring democratic/patriotic themes.
There will be a first place winner from each state, who will each win a minimum of $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. with all expenses paid.
The contest is open to all high school students and anyone interested is encouraged to enter.

The deadline for the contest is Nov. 1.
