Letter to the editor: Paul LePage no role model to look up to

Fri, 09/09/2016 - 12:00pm

Dear Gov. Paul LePage,

I’m writing to you today for one reason: I’m embarrassed that you’re my governor. Being 16, I have opened the doors to all the great opportunities that await me in my future. But now I wonder, will my future be here in Maine? Time and time again, you have made outrageous remarks regarding people of different races, ethnicities, and now you have threatened a Maine lawmaker. And to prove that you did threaten Representative Drew Gattine, here are your words: “I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you.” Now, I’m questioning whether I want to continue to live in a state with a hateful Governor.

I know right from wrong. And your comments were more than wrong -- they were inexcusably disgusting. That is not how anyone should behave, and your numerous comments have proved the type of person you truly are: Hateful.

In 2011, you told the NAACP to “kiss my butt.” Recently, you commented that “black people come up the highway and they kill Mainers.” Also, you have even threatened to halt food stamps to reliant Mainers over ridiculous issues. Here is what you said: “Doubtful that it will, I will be pursuing options to implement reform unilaterally or cease Maine’s administration of the food stamp program altogether.”

The point is, you are no role model to look up to. You are no figure who inspires me, or many people I know. Your consistent and bizarre temperament has raised awareness across the U.S., and across the world. Some state lawmakers, democrats and republicans, have denounced your outrageous comments. And now, several lawmakers are suggesting that you resign from office. I agree with them fully.

With confidence for a brighter future in Maine,
