Time capsule items sought as part of Rockport 125th celebration
ROCKPORT — A time capsule buried in 1980 in Macon, Ga., by students at Taylor Elementary School contained “many documents about what life, style, fads, fashion and political events were happening,” according to the Bibb County School District’s website. Though the bottom of the 30-gallon galvanized trashcan that served as the capsule had rusted and allowed mud to penetrate the contents, the students opening the time capsule in 2009-2010 were able to identify “an Izod sock, Michael Jackson’s Rock with You 45, a child-proof medicine bottle cap, a Susan B. Anthony silver dollar, a lipstick pencil, a pair of canvas Nikes, a pair of Docksiders (now known as Sperry’s) and a pair of blue jeans.”
According to the story, the students also documented that the latest in camera technology was the Polaroid, because photos were developed instantly. “Phones had been improved from rotary dials to push buttons. They also included a map of the school, the program from Sleeping Beauty and the price of various items at that time. Average income was $15,000 per year and gasoline cost $1.28 per gallon and milk was $.98 per gallon.”
This month, the Town of Rockport is collecting items for its own time capsule, in commemoration of its separation from the Town of Camden 125 years ago.
Items will be collected for the Rockport Time Capsule and be buried sometime in September, and then dug up 25 years from now, when Rockport will celebrate its 150th anniversary.
To add your items (no larger than a legal-size envelope or bulkier than 2-inches-wide, please! Thumb drives, DVDs, letters are ideal), take them to the Rockport Town Office front desk. Questions? Call 236-9648.
