Watershed School schedules summer workshops
The Watershed School in Camden announces a new summer series of workshops in creative writing, robotics, and the intersection of art and math for 12- to 17-year-olds. Workshops will be held in July and registration is now open.
Where the Mountains Meet the Sea — Creative Writing with Liza Gardner Walsh will meet for one day, Monday, July 11, from 9 a.m – 3:30 p.m. Students will go on several adventures to look closely at the world around them and use it as fodder for poems, short stories or narrative non-fiction. They will create land art installations and then write about it all while visiting the harbors, beaches and mountains of our beautiful town. Students are encouraged to bring their own notebooks, art supplies, journals as well as a pair of good walking shoes.
Interviewing and Journalism with Writer Erik Huber will meet on Monday, July 18, from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. After learning basic interviewing techniques, students will be turned loose on the town of Camden to find a story, interview an interesting local, or work on an editorial of their own. By day’s end, they will have written and revised a “copy,” and see their name in print as they publish a newspaper. Whether or not students want to be a journalists, they will leave this class more confident, engaging, concise and observant writers.
So You Want to Write a Novel with Ronni Arno will meet Monday, July 25, from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This workshop will focus on creating a plot for a novel, character development, and literary themes. Students will also learn how publishing works, including how to handle the three R's... rejections (every writer has them), revisions (nothing is perfect the first time), and rejoicing (when your hard work finally pays off).
Art and Math Are a Perfect Combination will meet Tuesdays in July. Take creative flair to this workshop, which will explore graphing equations to make artistic masterpieces.
Casino Royale – The Math of Games of Chance with instructor Mary Smyth will also meet Tuesdays in July. This fast-paced and active class will demonstrate math principles while students learn to play Vegas-style games of chance. Don’t worry--only fake money will change hands.
VEX Robotics with Pete Kalajian will be a 3-session workshop meeting on Wednesdays, July 13, 20 and 27 from 9 a.m - 3:30 p.m. This workshop will be the beginnings of a high school competitive robotics team. Get in on the exciting beginnings to learn to build and program (Robot C), a VEX robot.
Preregistration is required for any of the workshops and space is limited. The fee is $85 per day for any of the full day sessions and $50 for a ½ day workshop. There are discounts for registrants who choose to enroll in multiple workshops.
